What Do You Know About Green Number Plates?

Tue 6th Oct 2020

Green number plates will be introduced on a host of new cars this autumn, but according to a new poll only one in ten drivers know what they are all about.

The government is introducing green flashes onto the number plates of all new electric vehicles before the end of 2020, with the aim of making EVs stand out on the high street and make them easier to access benefits schemes such as free parking.

But a poll commissioned by the Motor Ombudsman has found that 88 per cent of car owners have no idea what the green number plates signify. However, despite the fact that not many people in the UK know about the green number plates, many are keen to jump on board if they mean their cars get preferential treatment. A third of drivers said they might be more likely to buy an electric vehicle if they got prioritised parking areas.

Commenting on the poll, Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “Electric vehicles are continuing to grow in popularity in the UK, and our study has offered a unique insight into how drivers view the latest initiatives introduced by government to encourage them to embrace pure zero emission motoring. Despite the results showing that consumer awareness of the arrival of the new green plates remains low, the findings nevertheless show a positive picture overall that drivers are happy to embrace them. However, when it comes to parking spaces being reserved solely for the use of EVs, it’s clear that the jury’s still out as to whether this will have any bearing on an individual’s decision to buy an electric vehicle.”
