What Wins Womens Car of the Year?

Do women look for something a little bit different when they are looking for their ideal car? Motoring marketing may suggest that small urban cars with lots of nice colours would be the No.1 choice of the fairer sex, but the latest award for best car for women suggests otherwise.

A panel of 50 female motoring experts from a total of 38 countries have come together to judge a unique award, naming the Land Rover Defender the supreme winner of the Womens Car of the Year.

“The jury's decisions represent the liking and preferences of millions of women drivers around the globe,” said Marta Garcia, executive president of Women’s Car of the Year.

“But cars have no gender and are not subject to stereotypes, so the winners of these awards are, quite simply, the best cars in the world.

“Voting criteria is based on the same principles that guide any driver when choosing a car. It is not a 'woman's car.”

Land Rover wasn’t the only winner at the awards, with Peugeot taking a couple of prizes, the 208 being named best Urban Car, and the 2008 taking the Urban SUB title. The Ferrari F8 Spider was named best sport car.

“Not all cars are designed with women in mind, though some are better than others,” said former Top Gear presenter, Sue Baker, who was on the panel of judges.

“Everyone expects women to want a pretty little city car. Well, that's not always the case. Women care about the cars they drive. The Land Rover Defender was an inspired winner.”
