Where Do The UK’s Naughtiest Drivers Live?

Sat 14th May 2022

While motorists from all parts of the UK can be prone to collecting penalty points on their licence, new research has revealed that there are some postcodes harboring more penalised drivers than others.

Analysis by Collingwood Insurance, using national travel survey statistics, found that while there may be only five per cent of motorists with any points at all on their licence, a seemingly small figure, there are hotspots, with Bradford postcodes featuring prominently in a list of problem areas.

The BD postcode appears five times in the top ten list of postcodes with the highest percentage of licence holders with penalty points, with West Yorkshire overall figuring heavily, along with Liverpool.

“BD3 is the area in the city where the most licence holders have penalty points, with 14.5% having one or more,” said the Collingwood report.

“However, drivers in L24, south-east of Liverpool city centre, are the most penalised in the country. Around one in seven drivers in the area (15.2%) have at least one penalty point on their licence, which is three times the national average.”

You would imagine that large urban areas would contribute quite heavily to the most penalised drivers, however that theory is contradicted that three Central London postcodes have the lowest percentage of licence holders with penalty points. EC4V near St Paul’s Cathedral in London actually has a 0.0% rate of penalty points, with these exclusive areas only matched by the rural Scottish islands of Islay and Arran. These lower percentage areas are helped by there being fewer vehicles, almost no speed cameras and less chance of encountering a traffic cop.
