The motor industry can be a very lucrative business for those manufacturers at the very top of their game. But how much profit do the top sellers make per second?
It’s perhaps not a question on the tip of everybody’s tongue, but now motor insurance group, Staveley Head have given us some figures which show that Toyota generates the most profit per second.
The research, which focused on the world’s 15 richest auto brands, tells us that it is not always the most expensive car brands that are driving the most profit. For example, in 2017, Toyota made £5,951 revenue every single second, of which £430.10 is profit. Meanwhile at the bottom of the 15 brand list is Bentley, who are making just £1.52 of profit every second.
Toyota sold more units than any other car brand in 2017, and it takes the Japanese brand just two days to earn £1 billion.
Ashley Peters, Managing Director of Staveley Head is predicting more changes to the status quo as the industry incorporates the work of some of the electric vehicle pioneers.
He said: “Next year will see further industry disruption with increased investment in electric car technology and the infrastructure to support them. There’ll also be additional government initiatives supporting the drives to create a low carbon economy and the banning sales of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2040.
“We may therefore see a shift in leadership, with brands like Renault, Nissan and Tesla having been early adopters in electric car technology development, along with Jaguar Land Rover and BMW, which have significantly increased their R&D in this area.
“The automotive market has seen a lot of change in recent years, but one thing is clear – they still make a lot of money. It’s interesting to see how much revenue and profit is made every second for each of these brands, especially when comparing everyday cars to luxury models.”
