A magnificent seven car brands are producing more than half of the UK’s cars, according to the latest figures released this month.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has also revealed that Ford is the dominant car brand, the producers of the Fiesta, enjoying a great 2018, with sales of 123,200 since the turn of the year.
Volkswagen have proven to be popular with UK car buyers, they have a range of vehicles which catch the eye, including the Polo, Golf and Tiguan.
Vauxhall comes third overall, with Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW and Nissan completing the domination. These seven brands have accounted for 52 per cent of all cars sold up until May 31st.
A strong month of May is a boost in the arm for the industry, this time last year UK sales were reeling from a -8.5% decline, which many blamed on hesitancy based on the election which was to come in June 2017.
“May’s growth, albeit on the back of large declines last year, is encouraging and suggests the market is now starting to return to a more natural running rate,” said SMMT Chief Executive, Mike Hawes.
“To ensure long-term stability, we need to avoid any further disruption to the market, and this will require sustainable policies that give consumers and businesses the confidence to invest in the new cars that best suit their needs.
“Fleet renewal is the fastest way to improve air quality and reduce CO2, and this applies to hybrid and plug-in technologies as well as the latest low emission petrol and diesels which, for many drivers, remain the right choice economically and environmentally.”
