Which Song Is Top Of The Pops When Driving?

Wed 22nd Jul 2020

Arguments over what songs or playlist to listen to in the car are endless, but it appears that some tunes are real winners for all drivers, with a survey proving the most popular tracks.

Halfords has analysed more than 300,000 songs from Spotify playlists which include the terms ‘car’, ‘driving’  and ‘road trip’ to find which are the most popular tunes for the open road, and there are some surprising choices.

  1. Sweet Home Alabama – Lynyrd Skynyrd

  2. Don’t Stop Believin’ – Journey

  3. Hotel California – Eagles

  4. Mr. Brightside – the Killers

  5. All Star – Smash Mouth

  6. Hey, Soul Sister – Train

  7. Africa – TOTO

  8. Livin’ On A Prayer – Bon Jovi

  9. Party In The U.S.A. – Miley Cyrus

  10. Hey There Delilah – Plain White T’s

The choice of tunes in the playlist suggests that America has a large influence over the playlists and certain destinations are perhaps more popular than others, with seemingly plenty of people driving to Alabama, California or generally anywhere in the USA. Although why Train is on the list for a driving is a bit of a curveball.

“It’s no surprise at all that some of the songs people listen to most in the car are absolute classic rock tracks and every tune is a singalong treat,” said the Halfords blog.

“Winning track Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynryd, Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing, Hotel California by Eagles, Toto’s Africa and Livin’ On A Prayer by Bon Jovi were all originally released in the 70s or 80s and, as our research shows, are still just as popular now for drivers hitting the road.

“In fact, the most modern songs in our top 10 were Hey, Soul Sister by Train and Party In The USA by Miley Cyrus, both of which were released way back in 2009, showing that we all must crave a little nostalgia when it comes to choosing the perfect road trip soundtrack.”
