Who Parks Their Car In Their Garage?

The prospect of fitting a vehicle in the garage at home may seem like a luxury to many. Whilst it would be nice to keep your car dry, to most it is an overgrown shed of junk.

Now a new report has revealed that 53 per cent of drivers with garages never actually park their cars in them. The analysis from RAC Home Insurance found that there are a range of reasons which we don’t use that perfect place to put our car, with most of us (68%) saying that we use the garage to store other items, while worryingly 30 per cent say that their is too large to fit through the door.

The survey looked at the views of more than 2,000 drivers, although there is estimated to be 11 homeowners with a garage. DIY tools are the most popular items stored in a garage, with 90 per cent of us saying we put paintbrushes in there, while gardening tools are also stored in the garage a lot.

“It seems most garages are nothing more than additional storage, perhaps because many houses don't have enough easily accessible space to store lots of household items,” said Simon Williams of RAC Home Insurance.

“Our findings show the vast majority of UK garages aren't used for the purpose they were intended. At best, 40 per cent of those with garages park their cars in them on a regular basis.
“But in fairness to many people with garages, some just aren't big enough to get a modern car in, and then there are some that you can drive into but are then too small to comfortably get in and out of your car.”
