Why Are Family Cars More Expensive To Insure?

Sun 9th Aug 2020

A new study has found that those who own a family car in the UK could be paying up to £300 more for their insurance than those with a standard motor.

MoneySuperMarket’s research has found that none of the most popular family cars are among the cheapest annual insurance policies, with the UK’s best loved family car, the Volkswagen Golf, £335 more expensive to insure than the cheapest family car, the Skoda Yeti. But the research found that even the Golf is cheap compared to the most expensive family car, the Tesla Model-X (£1,407). Family drivers in Huddersfield and Leeds pay more for their insurance, with an average premium of £598.

Dave Merrick, head of car insurance at MoneySuperMarket, said: “If you’re looking to buy a new car, it is always worth pricing up the cost of insurance before committing to a purchase.

“Our data shows the most popular cars in each region aren’t necessarily the ones that have the best insurance premiums. In fact, it is often the opposite — the most popular cars tend to have significantly higher insurance costs.

“There are many factors to consider when choosing a family car and, in order to keep costs down and keep on top of your finances, shopping around will help you find the best deal.”
