Convertible SUV’s, big beasty motors that can blow-dry your hair as you drive along. They are not as common as you might expect, Range Rover only recently announced a convertible Evoque, but now Volkswagen has announced its commitment to the cause.
The Volkswagen T-Roc cabriolet will be in production in 2020, so there’s some time to wait, but a financial outlay of approximately £70m suggests the German manufacturer is more than serious and won’t be leaving this topless wonder to the concept archive.
Images released by VW this week reveal that the T-Roc convertible will have a folding fabric roof, with two doors, similar to the T-Cross Breeze many saw at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.
“Volkswagen is evolving into an SUV brand,” said Volkswagen CEO, Dr Herbert Diess. “The T-Roc is already setting new standards in the compact SUV segment. With the cabriolet based on the T-Roc, we will be adding a highly emotional model to the range. I am especially pleased to note that we can count on the Osnabrück team’s decades of experience with convertibles. The Osnabrück plant now has bright prospects for the future.”
SUV’s have a huge future with Volkswagen, the Tiguan is one of 20 options for VW, among the 10 best-selling models in the world and one of the top three SUVs. By the time the T-Roc cabriolet hits the roads, we can expect around 40% of the vehicles sold by Volkswagen to be an SUV.
The non-drop-top version of the T-Roc was launched late last year and has already taken 40,000 orders across Europe.
