Myth 1: EVs have a short driving range and are not practical for long journeys
The original Nissan Leaf was the first mass-market all-electric vehicle to be sold, and came with a range of around 70-100 miles – far below what we can expect today.
Thankfully, battery technology has come a long way in the last decade, meaning official ranges of over 300 miles are not uncommon. Cars like the Polestar 2, Tesla Model 3 and Hyundai IONIQ 6 can all go more than 300 miles on a single charge.
This means that for the vast majority of motorists, driving an electric vehicle will offer more than enough range between charges. Research from the Department for Transport from 2022 showed that the average distance of a car trip in the UK was just 8.1 miles.
Infrastructure is also improving across the country. In January 2025, government data showed that there were over 73,000 publicly accessible EV chargers in the UK, representing an increase of 37% compared to the year before.
