Every year on 9th September, World EV Day™ celebrates the rise of electric vehicles and the positive change they bring to the UK and the planet. It’s a day to raise awareness, share knowledge and encourage everyone to consider the cleaner, greener way to get around.

Since its launch in 2020, World EV Day™ has grown into a global event bringing together drivers, experts and enthusiasts passionate about sustainable transport. With the UK’s ambition to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, switching to electric cars is one of the biggest steps we can take to protect our environment and improve air quality in towns and cities.

Why Choose an Electric Vehicle in the UK?

The UK is in a great position right now for EV drivers. Here’s why making the switch makes sense:

Cheaper to run, easier to charge

Forget expensive fuel and garage visits, EVs cost far less to run day to day, especially when you charge at home. With off-peak electricity rates as low as 7p per kWh, a full charge could be up to 90% cheaper than a tank of petrol. Smart home chargers even automate charging when energy is cheapest. The government still chips in too, with up to £350 off home charger installation, including for renters and flat owners. You’ll also save on servicing, as EVs have fewer moving parts than petrol or diesel cars, which means less maintenance and fewer trips to the garage. Just plug in, charge overnight, and you're ready to go.

Most EVs easily cover 200 miles or more on a single charge, which is way more than the average UK commute, just 10 miles each way. That means some drivers only need to charge once a week, or even less. No more queues at petrol stations! Need to top up while you're out and about? No worries, there are now over 85,000 public charging points across the UK, including more than 15,000 rapid chargers. Whether you're in London, Manchester, or just cruising up the M1, there's always a charger nearby.

EVs aren't just good for your wallet, they’re better for the planet too. Every electric car on the road cuts about 3 tonnes of CO₂ each year.
